Osaka & Kyoto Exhibition Statement

This is the first exhibition of SQEYS. Behind this name there is a small group of like minded people out of the need to chase the illusion of the loop of the dogma in the contemporary art scene.

Their work focuses on the creation of fables and characters that represent contemporary society. Intentionally, they use the influences of different graphic languages to reach the audience, one fable after the other.

This is what you see: What you see in this space is a tale. A fable, to be precise.  In the theory of games, a fable could be defined as something that has a beginning and it has an end. The characters acting in it are finite.

As you will notice in the two exhibitions in Osaka and Kyoto, -even if the drawings of the characters and the environment seem to be for kids-, the fable will speak of something near to your life experience. This is exactly the art practice of SQEYS.

Their attempt is an invitation to become an active character in your life. You are going to turn this story from something finite, in a finite space, in a gallery, in a controlled environment, to something infinite and see the world through new eyes.

Like contemporary Japanese Troubadours , SQEYS embrace the practice of narration as their very art practice. Their themes involve simple questions on our world that are formulated one tale after the other. This  becomes  SQEYS’ complex and multifaceted creation. A mesmerizing body of work that inccludes paintings, photography , installations, manga and sofuvi, the reason they firstly met.
It all is coherent, it all is cohesive. Instead of segregating their creative process adapting to the dogma of repetitive series, they chose to give all of themselves to let emerge the best fables, the best body of work.

“What is courage?”, “what is true friendship?” “What is having faith in oneself?”, “What is fighting against evil?”, “What is the act of forgiveness?”, “What is it like to live a life with no regrets?” .  These questions along all these centuries have been part of ourselves and found some hints thanks to the production of fables and their immortal characters in each civilization.

Like many fables,  like the great “The tale of the Heike”, like the European troubadour creating stories of Love and chivalry centuries ago, like the collection made by the infamous  Brothers Grimm studied last century by Bruno Bettelheim, the attempt of  SQEYS is bringing the observer, the audience, to live inside the fable. To become part of it and interpret the fable as a metaphysical compass of the contemporaneity.

To do so, to make this happen, the SQEYS formed and  decided to become a small collective. In order to act freely, they decided  to free themselves firstly from their personal names and act like Waldgängers. Only in this way the SQEYS believe they can communicate their fables and keep alive their art practice and act in their society.

We would like with this statement to thank the galleries hosting us and believing in our commitment:
